The Morris Room at Ravenhill House features the exquisite designs and poetry of William Morris (1834-1896). Morris, a prominent British designer, poet, and social activist, is best known for his pivotal role in the Arts and Crafts Movement. His early exposure to the medievalism of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, particularly through his friendships with Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, greatly influenced his aesthetic vision.
In 1861, Morris co-founded the decorative arts firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., later renamed Morris & Co. The firm produced a wide range of domestic items, including furniture, textiles, wallpapers, and stained glass, all designed with an emphasis on handcrafted quality and intricate patterns. Morris's designs often featured natural motifs, rich colors, and a revival of traditional craftsmanship techniques.
Built in 1890, Ravenhill House is the perfect setting for Morris's timeless designs. His patterns, celebrated for their beauty and commitment to social and artistic ideals, can be found throughout the house, with the Morris Room showcasing some of our favorites.
